San Diego Conservation Planning Hub

San Diego County has incredibly diverse natural and human systems, yet they face a broad range of threats like sea level rise, erosion, flooding, and fires—all of which are related to climate change. The San Diego Conservation Planning Hub connects experts that specialize in coastal and climate resilience with local community members and decision-makers. Our goal is to tackle climate threats using nature-based solutions in coastal dunes, canyons, parks, and other urban ecosystems.

Nature-based solutions, or NbS, are actions that protect, restore, and help ecosystems while improving the well-being of nature and humans alike. Our Hub builds resilience through capacity-building opportunities in collaboration with scientists, city and state agencies, community-based organizations, and land managers. These opportunities will engage local communities and include trainings on NbS, habitat restoration plans, site visits to different coastal ecosystems, and regional datasets and analysis.

The Hub intends to serve as a “help desk” for people interested in conserving and improving our green spaces, in addition to improving our local biodiversity. By bringing together resources and people across San Diego, strengthening existing networks of organizations and local communities, and centering The Nat’s extensive knowledge of nature in our region, we intend to pinpoint green spaces where habitat restoration can deliver the most benefits for both people and nature.

Climate Resilience Fellows

In collaboration with San Diego Canyonlands, The Nat has recruited 10 Climate Resilience Fellows to help engage local community members who live or work near urban canyons and dunes in San Diego County. The Fellows are integral to ensuring our work is anchored in an equity-first approach and local perspectives are included and prioritized in the restoration plans. This paid fellowship will provide support through community outreach events, local habitat restoration, and trainings related to best practices in NbS and climate resilience.
