Conservation Biology Projects

Healthy Canyons

Urban canyons are an iconic feature of San Diego, and provide important benefits for people, plants, and animals. Unfortunately, they are threatened by continued development, pollution, climate change, invasive species, and more. To help conserve these special places, we are conducting a biological survey of our city’s urban canyons and getting the community involved. Learn more.

State of Biodiversity

San Diego County is the most biodiverse county in the continental United States. It’s up to people and organizations like us to protect this amazing place we call home. Every year, we host an annual State of Biodiversity Symposium, bringing together scientists, conservationists, and nature lovers to discuss biodiversity in our region and how we can continue to preserve it. Learn more.

Collaboration for Conservation

Our land and water ecosystems are vital to our local species and essential for people’s well-being. However, threats like development and climate change are putting these natural spaces at risk. Learn how local conservation leaders are tackling these challenges and helping sustain our region’s legacy of biodiversity conservation. Learn more.

Binational Botany Conservation

After years of collaborative work, scientists on both sides of the border are celebrating the publication of a native flora inventory for Baja California. This list is paving the way for more coordinated and effective botanical conservation efforts along the U.S.-Mexico border and reminds us that the preservation of our natural lands transcends border lines. California Urban Nature Alliance

The Nat recently joined forces with other top-tier institutions in California to coordinate and enhance statewide urban biodiversity and environmental equity. We are building a network of experts, institutions, and empowered local communities that work together to steward urban landscapes—enhancing biodiversity and building resilient environments for all. Expeditions

Our scientists, along with peers in both the United States and Mexico, conduct biological expeditions and other field research in some areas of Southern California and throughout the Baja California Peninsula. One expedition at a time, we help contribute to the conservation of some of the most amazing places on Earth. Learn more.

Additional Conservation Projects

Our department isn’t the only one spearheading conservation efforts at The Nat. Check out some of the other projects being led by our scientific staff in Southern California and the Baja California Peninsula. From restoring a remote islands biodiversity to preserving ancient wildlife beneath our borderlands—you’re sure to find something interesting. Learn more.
