Conservation Biology

Helping conserve the astounding biodiversity in our region.

Southern California and the Baja California Peninsula are some of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. From snow-capped mountains to arid deserts, and from estuaries to chaparral, the region’s diverse ecosystems support thousands of unique species, many of which can be found nowhere else on Earth. However, these ecosystems are under threat.

So, who’s protecting nature? The Conservation Biology team collaborates across different scientific disciplines and with a variety of external partners to understand how the Museum’s existing regional efforts can inform conservation efforts at larger scales.

The group translates our research, collections, and community engagement into conservation recommendations and actions that are based on science. The department works on a wide variety of projects and has a heavy focus on how environmental changes affect species and their habitats. This multidisciplinary group works to improve biodiversity along with the quality of life for our local communities.

You'll never catch this team bored—but you can certainly catch them exploring our local canyons, forging partnerships across border walls, or just being epic leaders for our scientific expeditions!
