Docents
Docents are trained teaching guides who lead school and adult groups on Museum tours, and take the Museum on Wheels programs to schools and adult groups around the county.
Requirements include: completion of a six-month comprehensive course in natural history; two-year commitment, monthly meetings, and 10 hours of continuing education each year.
Like the outdoors?
If you’re a landlubber, become a Canyoneer.
Canyoneers
Canyoneers have been leading guided nature hikes throughout San Diego County since 1972. They receive a comprehensive class taught by our scientists and local experts on the natural history of the San Diego region. Requirements include: completion of a 13-week training in natural history and a commitment to lead 16 hikes over a two-year period.
If you love the ocean, become a Museum Whaler.
Museum Whalers
Museum Whalers provide naturalist interpretation aboard the Hornblower Whale & Dolphin-watching cruises. Cruises are mid-December through mid-April. Requirements include: completion of an eight-week training course and a minimum of three cruises per month during the whale-watching season.
Interested in natural science?
Ongoing opportunities are limited but volunteers are needed for specific projects. These change so check back frequently if none are listed under Current Needs.

Consider becoming an Exhibition Ambassador and provide extra-special customer service.
Exhibition Ambassadors
Exhibition Ambassadors work alongside Visitor Services staff in directing our visitors, answering questions about the Museum, promoting memberships, helping in the theater, and answering questions within our traveling exhibitions.

Covey
The Covey began in 1967 and serves as the auxiliary of the San Diego Natural History Museum, The Covey’s mission is to stimulate the interest and pride of the community for the Museum, encourage service by members in the Museum’s various volunteer activities and raise funds for the Museum through monthly luncheons.
