Education Volunteers
Canyoneers
Canyoneers interpret natural history by leading free, public weekend hikes in San Diego, Riverside and Imperial Counties. These may be Friday hikes with small groups of school children or weekend hikes with the general public. Canyoneers help the public to appreciate the region's special places.
A required 13-week training course begins each fall. This year’s class is full. To be considered for fall 2008, please complete an application.
Docents
Docents receive training from Museum staff and local experts on the flora, fauna, and geology of San Diego County and Baja California. They interpret this information to schools through in museum and outreach programs.

Museum Whalers
Museum Whalers are trained by Museum staff and marine scientists to provide naturalist interpretation on the Hornblower Whale Watch cruises.

Youth Spring/Summer Camp
Aides
Youth Spring/Summer Camp Aides (14-18 years old) assist our teachers in the classroom for Spring and Summer Camps. Please see complete description and requirements under Youth Opportunities.

Research Volunteers
Parabotanists
Parabotanists are trained to collect plant specimens in the field. Professional botanists and biologists are also encouraged to participate, but Parabotanists do not have to be experts in plant identification. Parabotanists are the specimen collection and documentation arm of the San Diego County Plant Atlas Project. All Parabotanists attend a mandatory training class that teaches proper plant collection techniques.
Opportunities are available seven days a week.
Science Volunteers
Science Volunteers assist curators in Botany, Ornithology, Mammalogy, Herpetology, Paleontology, Entomology, and the Research Library to manage and maintain collections. A background in a particular area is recommended, though training may be available.
All departments are open weekdays from 8:30 AM-5 PM, except Botany which is open from 9:30 AM-4 PM. Weekend and evening work are not available.

Other Volunteer Opportunities
Covey
The Covey has been the Museum's auxiliary group for over 30 years.
Its goal is to support and benefit the Museum. The Covey also
facilitates mailings and holds fundraising activities, including
luncheons and special programs.
Departmental Volunteers
Departmental volunteers help in the various operational departments
with clerical work, data entry, stuffing envelopes, other office
work, or helping with evening lectures. Some jobs are one-time
efforts such as converting a computer system or reorganizing
a file. Many people have some special skills or talents for which
we may have a niche.
