Support the Museum

Gifts make an enormous difference in carrying out the mission of the Museum: to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of Southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all people respect for the environment.

We value the support of foundations, corporations, and government grants, as well as the generosity of private individuals (see Donor Bill of Rights). We invite you to get involved–at whatever level!

Gifts and sponsorships for exhibitions make it possible to bring the highest quality national traveling exhibitions to San Diego. Many upcoming exhibitions offer sponsorship opportunities. We appreciate the community support we receive which provides a once-a-lifetime opportunity for many people to see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition.

A vast array of programs conducted by the Environmental Science Education Center for school students and the general public serves over 150,000 people annually. These programs are made possible in large measure through the generosity of our donors and offer a variety of sponsorship opportunities.

The Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias has a variety of exceptional projects in need of support. The Museum currently has established endowed chairs in Botany and Paleontology. Our goal is to establish donor-initiated curatorial chairs in each area of scientific research, as well as to expand existing endowments. Next in line are Mineralogy and Birds and Mammals. Other departments in need of support are Herpetology, Entomology, and Marine Invertebrates. Special Projects in Research include:

  • Binational Multidisciplinary Research Expeditions–The Museum's next expedition is planned for November 2003 to the remote and pristine eastern coast of Baja California, Agua Verde. SDNHM researchers will be joined by scientists from Mexican and other US institutions.
  • Collections Care–Our collection includes over 8.2 million biological and geological specimens from the late 19th century through today. Collections care is dependent upon up-to-date climate control systems and storage facilities. Records are also being moved from paper to electronic systems.
  • Research Library–The library includes more than 92,000 volumes and several unbroken collections of scientific journals. Many of these are represented in very few libraries in the world.
  • Book and Manuscript Conservation–Besides Laurence M. Klauber's personal collection of historic herpetology and natural history volumes, the Library houses outstanding rare books and manuscripts, including the Audubon Elephant Folio of bird paintings and the Valentien Collection of California wildflower paintings. The valuable Valentien paintings, commissioned by Ellen Browning Scripps in 1908, are the focus of our exhibition, Plant Portraits: The California Legacy of A.R. Valentien.
