Shrublands

Getting to Know Our Neighbors

Become acquainted with our natural communities of coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and riparian woodlands. Discover the millions of lives--butterflies, beetles, spiders, lizards--that depend on dwindling shrublands to make their home. Feel the cycles of the shrublands, governed by the nearby Pacific. Here winters are wet and mild; summers are long, hot, and dry; and fires are common.

In the Future Exhibits

  • Investigate animal holes and identify the inhabitants.
  • Look for animal tracks and other signs of life.
  • Trigger a late summer wildfire and see what grows from the ashes.
  • Learn how to create quality habitat in your backyard.
