Wetlands: Rich and Rare

Although diminished in range, coastal wetlands are engines of natural production. Tidal currents pump nutrients and oxygen throughout the salt marsh. Channels, mudflats, and various plants provide resources to diverse animal life. Home to migrant birds in winter, nursery to ocean-going fish, food source to residents year round--the effects of wetlands stretch well beyond their boundary. Look closely, this place is full of life!

In the Future Exhibits

  • See the salt marsh at high and low tide; observe how life responds.
  • Pull out a core sample of the salt marsh muddy bottom; see and feel models of the animals that live there.
  • Play "seek and find" with over one hundred species of birds that use the salt marsh habitat.
  • Walk like a heron or eat like a sandpiper in the "beaks and feet" game.
