At the Museum

Bring your students to explore the Museum and the natural history of southern California and beyond. Whether you participate in a self-guided visit, view a film, join our Docents for an in-gallery class, or enroll in one of our Museum science workshops, you are sure to enjoy an engaging experience. Registration is required for all programs. See descriptions below for details.

Museum School Group Admission
Grades: Preschool through college
Fee: $4 per person (minimum 10 students)
One adult per eight students required and admitted at no charge. Additional adults $6 per person.
Days: Daily from 9:30 AM-4:30 PM


Self-guided Visits

Conduct your own self-guided visit and enjoy the Museum's exhibitions and giant-screen films. Curriculum materials are available for most exhibitions and films online. Teachers may arrange to preview exhibitions by calling 619.255.0210. Self-guided visits are available year round; there is no additional charge for self-guided visits, exhibitions, or films.

Information about current and upcoming exhibitions may be viewed online.

Films are shown daily at the top of each hour in the Museum's Charmaine and Maurice Kaplan Theater and are included in museum admission. Call 619.232.3821 or see visitor information for more information and show times.


In-gallery Classes

Habitats of San Diego
Docents (trained volunteers) will lead your class on a "journey" through five San Diego County habitats. Using exhibitions and mounted specimens, students will learn how animals and plants have adapted to these unique environments. Groups are divided into six to eight students per Docent to explore the Museum's exhibitions. Pre- and post-visit materials provided. Presentations adjusted to accommodate various grade levels.

The FOSSIL MYSTERIES Epoch Experience

Find out more about our new permanent exhibiton, Fossil Mysteries. This investigative in-gallery program will allow students to explore and discover extraordinary San Diego and Baja California in an entirely new way. Students will consider the concepts of ecology and evolution through the examination of ancient mysteries. Fossil evidence will reveal stories of change, adaptation, survival and extinction.

Fee: $6 per student (includes Museum admission)
Days: Mondays and Fridays
Times: 10–11:30 AM or noon–1:30 PM
Group size: 32 students maximum


GATE Class

Door to the Desert
Join the Docents for a virtual journey through the desert to study a natural community of extremes. Your class will study the Museum's desert and mountain exhibits, conduct several experiments, go behind the scenes, and meet a scientist. Pre- and post-visit materials provided.
