At the Museum | At Your School

Let us bring the Museum to your classroom or daycare center! Presented by Docents (trained volunteers) or Museum instructors, these programs emphasize the natural history of the San Diego region and correlate with California Science Content Standards. Electronic pre- and post-visit materials are available.
Mileage fee: schools more than 25 miles from the Museum will be charged an additional 50 cents per mile.

Preschool Adventures

Preschool (ages 4 and 5) and Kindergarten
Created for young learners, these programs allow for investigation, inquiry and discovery through games, discussion, and hands-on activities.

Available October 2005–June 2006
Location: Your school site
Days: Weekdays
Fee: $150 per school visit (two one-hour programs)
Times: Flexible hours
Group size: 20 students maximum per one-hour session
Please schedule two one-hour programs in the same room per school visit.

Mesozoic Monsters
Young children are fascinated by creatures from the past. Join us for an imaginary visit to the Mesozoic Era. What kinds of animals lived then? What did they eat? How big were they? Touch a real dinosaur fossil and make a "fossil" to keep.

By the Beach
Take a pretend trip to the beach as you listen to the sound of waves, feel sand and beach pebbles, smell seaweed-and taste it if you dare! Play the hermit crab house-search game and make a sand picture to take home.

Docents love to bring the Museum to your classroom! Through the use of mounted Museum specimens, these one-hour programs emphasize the natural history of the San Diego region and correlate with California Science Content Standards. Pre- and post-visit materials provided.

Incredible Insects
Using preserved and live specimens, get to know the fascinating world of insects. This class emphasizes insects common in our area-our closest neighbors!

Nature's Night Life
Who comes out at night? Through the use of mounted specimens, hands-on experiments, and slides, explore the special adaptations of some of San Diego County's nocturnal creatures.

Life in the Desert
How do living organisms adapt to extreme conditions? Discover the fascinating plants and animals that inhabit our local desert through mounted specimens and living desert creatures. Examine rocks and minerals that provide insight into local desert geology.

Roadrunners
San Diego County is one of the most biologically diverse counties in the nation. Our Docent "Roadrunners" bring cased and touchable specimens to your classroom for an engaging program about five of San Diego County's unique habitats.

Crawlin' Critters
Meet some of San Diego County's snakes, lizards, frogs, salamanders, and turtles. Discover the adaptations and natural history of local reptiles and amphibians as while examine Museum specimens. Use charts and skeletal materials to interpret the anatomy and physiology of these fascinating animals.

Science Workshops

These standards-based workshops presented by the Museum's instructors include inquiry-based discussion and hands-on activities.

Fee: $180 (for two 1.5-hour programs); $80 for an additional class at the same location (same day, same topic, limit three programs per day)

Group size: 20 students maximum for grades K-3 per 1.5-hour session; 32 maximum for grades 4–6.

Earth Detectives 1 and 2
Available January–June 2007
Become a nature detective, sharpening your observational skills while investigating clues found in nature. Understanding Earth's systems is an important part of environmental literacy.
1. Flora and Fauna—Kindergartners and first graders will enjoy investigating plant and animal signs. What's living and growing around us?

Autumn Harvest Hits the Road
Available October–December 2006
Step back in time and discover how local Native Americans were masters of survival. From the seashore to the desert, the natural environment provided for all basic needs. Explore the many uses of native plants, animals, and earth materials.

Eyes on Nature
Available September 2006–June 2007
Connect science and language arts. Based on The Private Eye: Looking and Thinking by Analogy curriculum, this interdisciplinary program provides an opportunity to see things from a new perspective. Using 5x magnifying loupes, students study natural objects, learn to write analogies, and develop their scientific process skills.

Gem of a County
Available September 2006–June 2007
San Diego County is known for its minerals and gemstones. Using Museum specimens, students explore the rock cycle and formation, identifying characteristics and uses of some of San Diego County's minerals.

It's Elemental (Beginning and Advanced)
Available January–June 2007
Chemistry is basic to an understanding of the natural world and an important part of fifth grade science standards. These two classes are designed to introduce students to the study of matter.
It's Elemental Beginning—Explore the properties of matter and get cozy with atoms, molecules and the periodic table. Scavenger hunt for common elements found all around us.

It's Elemental Advanced—Consider atomic structure, chemical bonds and how to distinguish between chemical and physical changes. Students will create bouncing putty as they explore the chemistry of polymers.

Grade 6

Rock 'n' Roll
Available September 2006–June 2007
This program is everything you need to satisfy your grade 6 Earth Science requirement! Demonstrations and hands-on experiments investigate the structure of Earth, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the theory of plate tectonics.

Snakes and Lizards of Southern California or Reptile Rescue

Alicia Berg, expert reptile handler, brings live animals to your classroom for an up-close experience with local and rescued reptile species. Each of these programs is adaptable for grades K-8.

Ms. Frizzle'sTM Classroom Adventures

Have Scholastic's favorite science teacher visit your classroom! Students have the opportunity to take chances, ask questions, and get messy while learning about dinosaurs, bats, raptors, or reptiles.

Blue Sky Nature Reserve

Nature Walks

Experience the natural beauty of San Diego County on a one-hour nature walk led by the Museum's Canyoneers (trained volunteer naturalists). Learn about native plants and animals, how they have adapted to their environment, and how some were used by the Kumeyaay. Choose from a selection of popular walk locations. Classes are divided into four to six students per Canyoneer for a small-group learning experience. Pre-walk classroom programs are available upon request.
