Among the Great Whales See gray whales in their natural habitat on this voyage with Lindblad Expeditions. During the days in Bahía Magdalena’s lagoons, venture among the gray whales in Zodiacs for a water-level perspective. Join Dr. Rebman for guided walks on desert islands, snorkel with sea lions and kayak in the Sea of Cortés. Whales, dolphins, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, huge cardon cacti, mangroves and sand dunes are among just a few of the wonders on this tour.

Costa Rica is a paradox: while rugged volcanic mountain ranges have created formidable barriers between the Caribbean and Pacific lowlands, they have also formed a land bridge bringing faunas of North and South America together. Isolation and connection are keys to understanding why Costa Rica, though small, is big when it comes to biodiversity, and also why it has become a center for bird lovers the world over. Join Phil Unitt on this expedition that will delight experienced birders with a keen interest in the kaleidoscope of tropical birding. Price includes airfare from San Diego. ![]() No other expedition makes it possible to see Emperor and King Penguins during one voyage. Share the adventure with special guests Robert Bateman and Birgit Freybe Bateman. Mid-September, after six long months of bitter cold and darkness, the sun returns to the Antarctic sky. As the light from the sun increases, penguins begin a period of intense activity—building nests, courting, incubating eggs, and raising chicks. With two exceptions—King and Emperor Penguins. As the sun returns, adult Emperors are in the final stage of raising their young. The males—having incubated a single egg through the long, dark Antarctic winter—race to ensure their offspring are strong enough to survive immersion in the frigid waters of the Southern Ocean. During this expedition, visit the Snow Hill Island rookery while the chicks are still in the care of their parents. A rare opportunity, as the weather and ice conditions only permit visits for about one month a year. ![]() Spend three days (subject to change) with the Emperors before sailing to South Georgia, where some of the largest colonies of King Penguins are found. Encounter the birds in all stages of growth, since King Penguins breed year round: from fluffy chicks to moulting adults and “woollies” (adolescent King Penguins that were once thought to be separate species). Enriching this singular adventure will be special guests Robert Bateman and Birgit Freybe Bateman. The Batemans have earned international reputations as artists and conservationists. They will share a lifetime of experience during two onboard presentations.
