Pages from the Rare Book Collection
of the San Diego Natural History Museum
Selected images from Born’s Testacea Musei Caesarei Vindobonensis, 1780, one of the treasures in the Rare Book Room of the San Diego Natural History Museum’s Research Library, have been meticulously adapted to our newest note card assortment. The Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780) of Austria commissioned Baron Ignaz von Born to organize and describe her Imperial collection of shells and produce an illustrated catalog.
Five stunning shell images were taken from the hand-colored engravings which are regarded as some of the most sumptuously detailed illustrations of shells from the Golden Age of natural history illustration.
The creation of these note cards was made possible by the generous support of the San Diego Natural History Museum Covey.
