Colorful baskets from the Amazon rainforest are created by the Community of Esperanza in the Loreto region of Peru and is supported by a regional government program for conservation and sustainable management of the region’s natural resources. In turn, sales of these baskets allow the local residents to earn money for their families and community while preserving the rich biodiversity of their region. In an area where more than 70% of the population lives in poverty, the baskets are an excellent source of income and are also environmentally friendly.

The fibers used to create these baskets are made from the Chambira Palm and are collected in such a way as not to harm or damage the tree. Each basket is unique in the color of the fibers, the weaving pattern, and the intricate use of wood beads and other additions that make each basket a work of art.

Every basket that is purchased is one small step toward a more prosperous future for the Community of Esperanza, and a hope for a greener tomorrow for us all.
