Materials Training Programs
Tijuana River Watershed (la cuenca)

Major Curricula

1. Curricula written and produced by PROBEA

¿Qué me cuentas de la cuenca? (Tell Me about the Watershed)

The Tijuana River Watershed serves as a model for learning about watershed dynamics, which can be applied to any watershed. Based on a 30-minute video produced in 2005, the curriculum addresses such themes as the water cycle, geographical aspects of the watershed, biodiversity, ecosystem and the effects of human population on the watershed. PROBEA trains educators in how to use resources they receive at the workshop conclusion: the Tijuana River Watershed video, the Tijuana River Watershed Atlas, a bilingual CD-ROM and a resource guide. Grades 4-12.

Visita a Ecoparque

Visita a Ecoparque (Visit to Ecoparque)

A curriculum consisting of activities to be carried out jointly by promotores (community volunteers) and teachers before, during, and after the visit to this ecological park in Tijuana, begins with information on the Tijuana River watershed. Students go on to the theme of cycles. They learn about (or review) the water cycle. Following this, they engage in activities about composting and the food web, relating them to the cycles of life and the cycle of materials through the ecosystem. The curriculum stresses a hands-on interactive approach to learning. Grades 3-6.

Todos cuidamos el agua

Todos cuidamos el agua (We All Take Care of Water)

This program carries a message about domestic water use and conservation to community members. Participants learn about where water comes from, how to ensure that drinking water is clean and how to conserve water. Training includes hands-on activities to demonstrate how much water is used for various activities, and a “water meter” is used to measure how much water is consumed at home. This workshop is designed for community volunteers.

Substancias y materiales peligrosos en el hogar

Substancias y materiales peligrosos en el hogar (Hazardous Substances in the Home)

How can we tell which household substances pose a threat to our health and to the environment? How can we safely use and store them? What safe alternatives exist? Through hands-on activities, participants learn the answers to these questions. Workshop participants carry out a project that implements a change in their behavior with regard to their management and use of household toxics. Grades 4-6.

Del aula a la naturaleza: construyendo habitats

Cuadernillo de proyectos escolares (School Projects)

As we develop knowledge and awareness about environmental issues, we begin to see a need to DO something. This workshop presents nine school projects at the simple, intermediate and advanced levels. Teachers and students learn skills that allow them to make a difference in their local community. All levels.

Ocean Oasis

2. Curricula written and produced by SDNHM and translated by PROBEA

Oasis marino, guía para el maestro (Ocean Oasis Teacher's Guide), SDNHM - Spanish/English (PDF format*)

Ocean Oasis, a stunning film about the magic of Baja California, Mexico and the Gulf of California, explores these areas through several themes that have global, as well as local, implications. On a geological level, tectonic forces and weathering shape and change the entire globe. The film illustrates how geographical location and circulation of the atmosphere affect climate. Life forms adapt to their diverse habitats in amazing ways. Many human activities affect local ecosystems and the consequences of these activities can be far-reaching. The activities in the teacher’s guide have a local connection to help students make conceptual bridges between their immediate region and Ocean Oasis. Targeted for grades 4-8, many of the activities provide an opportunity to discuss conservation and the human impact on natural resources, regardless of locale. Each teacher receives the Teacher’s Guide and a copy of the film for their school. Grades 4 – 8.

Cuadernillo de proyectos escolares

3. Curricula written and produced by other organizations and/or authors

Del aula a la naturaleza: construyendo hábitats escolares (School Yard Habitats), National Wildlife Federation, Washington, DC

In this program developed by the National Wildlife Federation, teachers and students learn about native plants and the importance of creating habitat to attract urban wildlife. They learn about the elements of habitat—food, water, shelter, and a safe place to raise young—and design and plant a habitat garden on their school grounds. All grades.

El joven naturalista

El joven naturalista (The Making of a Naturalist), Grass Roots Educators, San Diego, CA

El joven naturalista features a mind map to teach ecosystem concepts. In addition, students learn field ecology skills through plant, insect and bird observations sheets. The workshop also includes material on how to successfully lead students on outdoor learning experiences. Elementary and middle school.

Calidad del agua (Water Quality), San Diego County Water Authority, San Diego, CA

Students learn about water quality through performing nine water quality tests using an educational kit developed by the San Diego County Water Authority Education Department. Tests include temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrates, turbidity, total dissolved solids, hardness and water-borne microorganisms. Workshop participants learn about the importance of each test and perform the tests. Middle and high school.

About Bats, Educators Activity Guide,
Bat Conservation International (BCI)
Herramientas para enseñar la conservación de los murciélagos (Tools for Teaching Bat Conservation)
by PROBEA for BCI - Spanish/English (PDF format*)

Bats are among the most intensely feared and relentlessly persecuted animals on earth. In fact, bats play key roles in a wide variety of ecosystems across the globe, from rain forests to deserts. Unfortunately, we’ve let our ignorance jeopardize one of the earth’s most valuable assets. The best protection we can offer these beneficial animals is to learn and share the truth about them. This workshop is offered through collaboration with Bat Conservation International. Grades 3-6.

Short curricula:
Written by Tierra MyA, Educadores Ambientales, Ensenada, BC

Un viaje alrededor del agua (A Journey through Water)

Students learn about the importance of water for life through hands-on activities to discover important aspects of water, such as water’s physical states and the water cycle, among others.

Qué hacer con la basura (What to Do with Trash)

Students learn about waste management through hands-on activities to discover the difference between trash and waste and what can be done to dispose, reduce and recycle waste materials.

Las maravillas de las semillas I (Wonders of Seeds I)
Las maravillas de las semillas II (Wonders of Seeds II)

Students learn about the importance of seeds for plant preservation, as well as the different ways plants disperse their seeds. They also learn about the difficult process native plants go through to germinate their seeds, and how native people in the Baja California region use seeds.
