Robert F. Smith is president of Strategies & Teams, Inc., consultants to companies, institutions, and governments in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
Strategies & Teams specializes in the design and facilitation of strategic planning processes and team-building activities in large, complex enterprises. Customized organization development, management education, culture change programs and mentoring are also provided for clients.
Smith has served as president and chairman of Phillips-Ramsey Company, marketing and advertising agency in San Diego, California, now Campbell Mithum West in the Interpublic Group of Compainies. He also was co-founder and chairman of Nuffer/Smith/Tucker, Inc., public relations, issues management and planning counsel, also headquartered in San Diego.
Smith has been a principal chairman, speaker and consultant for the American Management Association's CEO Division and AMA/International's management centers in the United States, Europe, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Canada, including a unique appointment as resident executive trainer at Management Centre Europe in Brussels. For his contributions to professional management he was presented the AMA Presidents Association Citation in 1994 and 1980. Described as "dean and mentor," he has chaired or spoken at over 150 courses and seminars sponsored by the AMA CEO Division.
A longtime leader in tourism development for the San Diego/Baja California, Mexico region, Smith has served as managing director of the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau, chairman and charter member of the California State Tourism Commission and charter member of the California State Economic Development Commission.
From the Governor of Baja California, he has received a Silver Medal for outstanding service to the state's tourist industry.
In 1984 the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau presented him its RCA Lubach Award for his leadership in development of San Diego and Baja California tourism infra-structure, promotion and funding.
In the academic world, he has been assistant director of the Institute of Industrial Relations at UCLA, a charter member of the statewide University of California Extension Committee, member of the Board of Overseers and Chancellor's Associates at the University of California, San Diego, and consultant to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
Actively pursuing interests in wildlife research and conservation, he has been vice president and trustee of the 250,000-member Zoological Society of San Diego and consultant to the San Diego Natural History Museum, the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden (South Carolina), Chicago Academy of Sciences, American Society for Horticultural Science, American Seed Trade Association, and the Mexican Fund for the Conversation of Nature.
His degrees include an MBA (Management Theory and Organization) under a Ford Foundation grant at UCLA; BS (Naval Science) and BA (Economics), both Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Southern California. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma Scholastic honor societies.
