Sherlockiana In addition to his devotion to his career as a business executive, and to his equally full career in herpetological research, Laurence Klauber found time to apply his keen intellect to artistic and literary questions in other fields. In the following paper, he elucidates a question regarding an adventure of Sherlock Holmes that had baffled herpetologists for decades. Republished from: The Baker Street Journal, an Irregular Quarterly of Sherlockiana, Vol. 3, No. 2, pp. 149-157, 1948. We would like to express our gratitude to the editors for their gracious encouragement of this publication of the Klauber paper, and to the Klauber family for granting permission to publish it here. Those who wish to refresh their memory of the original publication by Conan Doyle of the Adventure of the Speckled Band may find the text at 221B Baker Street. The Baker Street Journal is still being published, fifty years after the appearance of Klauber's work. |
