Whaler's log :: Blue whales on a mission

Today was a fabulous day on the ocean – sunny yet temperate weather and relatively calm seas. Throughout the day we were entertained and educated by common and bottlenose dolphins who delighted us with their antics.

We were approximately 7 miles out when we encountered a spectacular pod of three adult blue whales. It appeared they were on a mission as they were swimming quite rapidly, but very cooperatively, as they stayed on the surface for long periods of time.

Later in the day we shared the open water with a pair of beautiful blues. This couple was just kind of hanging around so they were very photogenic. They stayed close and gave ample us opportunity for photos.

Kudos to Dave the Cook who makes the best grilled cheese sandwich in the world!
